Inside Knowde: Behind the scenes of a startup

Working at Knowde
Ever wonder what it’s like to work at a startup company like Knowde, especially if you’re used to a traditional corporate environment?
To start with, it’s important to understand Knowde’s mission: We’re building the largest marketplace on the planet, and in the process, we’re changing the way buyers and suppliers in the chemical industry converge and do business.
This has never been done before.
In a few short years, Knowde already has more than 135,000 products and 5,000 supplier storefronts, and tens of thousands of buyers — more than any distributor, marketplace or middleman organization in the history of the industry.
Structured for success
How’d we get there so fast?
Startups like Knowde typically move at a very fast pace. In contrast, more traditional corporations tend to have more protocols and gates in place due to an over-standardized formal hierarchical structure.
With fewer layers of management and fewer employees, working at a startup means more autonomy and more responsibility. Knowde gives every team member the freedom to make decisions which would require dozens of stamps of approval at other companies.
Knowde trusts that team members can self-sustain, learn quickly, and seek out resources they may need without requiring a lot of direction. This autonomy facilitates personal growth, builds confidence, and enables employees to contribute fresh ideas and opinions.
At Knowde, we don’t hold anyone back from achieving their full potential by encouraging them to trust themselves and take calculated risks. However, more veteran team members are always accessible and willing to help.
Facilitating personal growth
Knowde helps employees improve problem solving and critical thinking skills. Team members are given opportunities to test personal hypotheses on existing or potential features, and feedback is welcomed at all levels of operation.
Knowde also encourages employees to venture outside their immediate scope and learn new skills.
It’s not uncommon, for example, for an operations associate to lend a hand in customer support, review and report on metrics, or be asked to help during the product discovery process.
Even when roles are well-defined, there’s less red tape when pursuing new experiences in different positions or departments. Knowde welcomes people who raise their hands and jump at the chance to help out on work outside of their daily responsibilities.
How do you know if a startup environment is right for you?
The answer, of course, depends on a number of factors. But whether you’re new to the workforce or an industry veteran, if you can thrive in a fast-paced environment and want to be part of building something big from the ground up, then a startup might be right choice for you.
